Neanderthal Fire Company

Butchers block and accessories for the cave man in all of us

A few months ago, I started using the Neanderthal Fire Company butchers block and I haven't stopped being impressed since it arrived. Based in Ohio, these guys are producing some seriously high quality barbecue products that are big, hard wearing and tough enough to handle even the roughest neanderthal.

For me, their stand out product is definitely the butchers block. It's hand made from American Walnut and weighing in at nearly ten pounds, it definitely is not your mums chopping board.

It's easy to tell that this board was created by people who know a thing or two about barbecue themselves. This thing is BIG. like two feet across big and definitely up to the challenge of handling a big slab of brisket or prime rib. It also has one of the best features I have seen in a product like this - They call it the hot tub. Fed by a thick juice groove running the outside of the board, the hot tub collects all your juices and delicious flavours from slicing up your meat. Perfect for dipping some crusty bread into while you are waiting for your guests to arrive.

The photos in this review are of my own board. I'll be the first to admit that it doesn't look perfect. It's got some marks across the surface, and a burn line through the centre where an almost red hot grill got a little bit too friendly with it, after being pulled off a grease fire. It certainly looks worse for wear since the day it arrived. But honestly - If you aren't using it, what's the point. I love this board, but If I wasn't really using something this good, it would be a genuine disservice to the product.

Not only have the legends over at Neanderthal Fire Company created a fantastic product, they recently introduced a way to keep your board in top condition.

Like anyone who has ever used a cast iron frying pan will tell you, in order to get the best results out of your products, they require a little bit of love. For the Neanderthal Butcher Block, this comes in the form of their brand new Wood Wax

Because the board is made of real walnut, frequent usage will leave it getting a little discoloured and thirsty looking. One quick treatment with this wax will bring the wood back to an incredible condition and leaving it looking just as good as the day it shipped.

This picture here shows a side by side of my own board before and after using the wood wax. After the treatment the wood was back to it's deep brown colour and was looking seriously slick again!

So if you are in the market for a hard wearing butchers block, big enough to handle your briskets and yet pretty enough that your wife lets you put it on the kitchen table, check out the link below and support these legends.

French Dip Sliders

There’s something primal and perfect about a French dip slider when it’s done right. Not fussy. Not dressed up with microgreens or some half-hearted aioli. Just soft buns cradling meat that practically melts on contact, rich caramelized onions that took their sweet time getting there, and bubbly, gooey cheese.

Smoked Chocolate Chip Cookies

These cookies are soft in the middle, crisp around the edges, and infused with that smoky campfire vibe that turns heads at every backyard picnic. They will immediately become the crowd pleaser at your next event.

Smoked Finger Steaks

We’re talking about finger steaks. Crispy, juicy strips of battered beef that were practically made for dunking in fry sauce and eating by the handful.
